Call for Applications: EDSN Fellowship 2019-20

The Eurasia Democratic Security Network (EDSN), a project by the Center for Social Sciences with the generous funding of the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), is seeking applicants for its 2019-20 Research and Policy Fellowship.

EDSN is a network of Europe and Eurasia scholars investigating the nexus between democracy and security, with special attention paid to the conditional and non-conditional impetuses for democratic reform. In its first two years, the EDSN fellowship has included prominent scholars from the United States, Europe, and Eurasia and given them an environment to make key contributions to research and policy related to democracy and security. After just two years, EDSN alumni include senior-level ministers in governments, diplomats, notable scholars, and analysts.

For 2019-20, EDSN will provide seven new fellowships to emerging and established policy scholars and practitioners interested in exploring the relationship between democracy and security with an emphasis on political development and democratic transitions.

Benefits

The EDSN fellowship is a unique opportunity for collaborative scholarship and policy advisory, bringing together a diverse group of accomplished and entrepreneurial policy scholars and practitioners. The EDSN fellowship is aimed to be an intellectual experience, offering participants the opportunity to explore rarely-elaborated concepts and issues at a deep level, but tied to practical questions of policy.

Other benefits from participation and successful completion of the program include:

  • Two trips, including roundtrip travel and accommodations, to Georgia for the program kickoff event (early June 2019) and international conference (spring 2020).
  • The opportunity to network and collaborate with leading regional scholars.
  • A unique platform to showcase policy expertise and advisory, which is monitored, consumed, and utilized by top research, government, and media organizations.
  • Join a close-knit group of alumni whose work has already informed regional policy thinking.
  • A modest honorarium ($1000 USD) upon completion of the fellowship.

Fellowship Requirements

  • Fellows will be expected to participate fully in the fellowship activities, which include:
    • Attending and participating in Georgia kickoff and conference events;
    • Authoring a combination of blog posts and policy papers;
    • Regular engagement over the course of the fellowship year, including participation in teleconference events with other fellows and program staff; and
    • Encouraged to participate in or host a regional event in their home country.
  • Qualifications for the fellowship are flexibles, but successful applicants will likely:
    • Have established or demonstrably rising regional policy scholars or practitioners
    • Possess advanced education and/or significant experience
    • Be able to write and speak fluently in English (working language)
    • Show clearly professional/scholarly interest in the relationship between democracy and security
