Panel Discussion on “Kyrgyzstan in 30 Years: Prospects for Democracy”

On 26 January, 2018 the EDSN project hosted a discussion event “Kyrgyzstan in 30 years: prospects for democracy”. The event was organized at the American University of Central Asia, Kyrgyzstan, and co-organized by AUCA’s Panorama Political Club. The discussion aimed at looking back at nearly 30 years of democratization and evaluating the key lessons and problems along the way as well as thoughts on prospects of democracy in the country. The discussion covered a critical assessment of the role of Kyrgyzstan’s external actors in promoting democracy, through conditionality, in the country since early 1990s.


The event featured three invited speakers:


  • Amb. Muratbek Imanaliev, former Foreign Minister and Secretary General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization,
  • Prof. Zainidin Kurmanov, head of the IR department in the Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University, former speaker of the parliament,
  • Mr. Ravshan Jeenbekov, an opposition politician, a former member of the parliament.



The discussion was chaired by Shairbek Juraev, EDSN fellow. The event was attended by civil society activists, students, university professors and members of political parties.
